On August 28, 2006 Janice Patterson emailed Latimer to tell us that she had some answers to our mystery. Among the printed list of names were the names of her mother, Aundine Bates and her great-grandmother, Nettie Bates, as well as the names of people she recalled from her childhood in Augusta, Butler County, Kansas.
Janice believes that the names with dates are in memory of deceased persons, possibly the date of their death. She guesses that the quilt was made between August 13, 1935, the date with Mattie Bayles name, and February 1938, when her great-grandmother died. Janice believes that the women were in the First Christian Church women’s fellowship together. She has not discovered how the quilt ended up in Oregon.
